What is Dry Skin?
Dry skin is a common condition in which skin does not have enough moisture to remain hydrated, supple and healthy. Your skin is normally protected against moisture loss by oils naturally produced by your body. When oil is not produced in sufficient amounts, the skin can become prone to dryness, tightness, itching and break down.
What Causes Dry Feet?
1. Climates that have low humidity levels. (Mainly Northern Climates in the Winter)
2. Excessive bathing and swimming pool use.
3. Hot sand at the beach can be very drying.
4. Vitamin A and D deficiencies.
5. Materials such as wool or synthetic fibers found in many shoes and socks.
6. Systemic conditions such as Thyroid Disease.
Why Treat Dry Feet?
Your feet have a lot of stress put on them every day and getting you all the places you need to go and they must be protected from friction and shearing forces, to aid in pain free function.
Untreated dry skin may result in many complications, including rashes, eczema, secondary bacterial infections, cellulitis, and skin discoloration. It is best to treat before problems arise, remember the old saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
What are the Best Treatments for Dry Skin of the Feet?
Research published in in both the Journal of Clinical Dermatology and Journal of America Podiatric Medical Association have routinely confirmed that regular cream is very slow to work and has a limited ability to penetrate the thick skin on the plantar(bottom) aspect of the foot. Many studies have shown that both Urea between 35% and 42% (such as found in KERA 42 made by CTS) and Lactic Acid(such as Lactinol HX) have had faster results and better long term outcomes.
If you have dry skin do not wait ask your podiatrist which treatment is best for you.
